Democratic Freedom Party

The Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) is the joint effort of elements of the NDC, NPP and the Nkrumahist family alienated by the policies and actions of their parent organizations.

Their aim is to establish an organization of free thinkers determined to promote internal party democracy, to sustain democracy nationally and to promote the welfare of the masses.

By April 2006 the name of the party, its constitution, symbol and colours had been agreed upon by a group of promoters of the new party.

The search for founders, offices and interim officers as required by the Political Parties Act, 2000(Act 574) for the registration by the Electoral Commission of political parties was begun.

The delay in registering the party was partly due to the fact that the new application forms which the Electoral Commission had to prepare following the expansion of the political districts of the country from 110 to 138 were not ready on time.

The application for the registration of the party was eventually made on Friday July 21, 2006. An interim certificate was issued to the party on Tuesday August 2 and the final certificate on Friday, 20th October 2006.
